Rhode Island Temporary Disability Insurance and Temporary Caregiver Insurance

Temporary Disability Insurance (TDI) provides benefit payments to insured Rhode Island workers for weeks of unemployment resulting from a non-work-related illness or injury. TDI is fully funded by Rhode Island workers.

Temporary Caregiver Insurance (TCI) provides eligible claimants caregiver benefits to care for a seriously ill family member or bond with a child. TCI is fully funded by Rhode Island workers.

Covered Employer All Rhode Island employers are required to provide TDI and TCI if they employ one or more employees in Rhode Island.
Eligibility Employees who work in Rhode Island who are covered by TDI, including those who live out of state.
Leave Types
  • Employee’s own serious health condition
  • Care for a seriously ill child, spouse, domestic partner, parent, parent-in-law or grandparent
  • Bond with a newborn child, adopted child or foster child.
Waiting Period
  • TDI: Benefits paid retroactive to first day if leave extends for 7 or more days
  • TCI: None
Weekly Benefit
  • 4.62% of total high quarter wages in base period
  • For TDI, an additional child benefit is payable equal o the greater of $10 or 7% of the benefit rate for up to five children
Maximum Benefit The max benefit increased to $978 effective 7/1/2021
Maximum Duration
  • TDI: 30 weeks
  • TCI: 4 Weeks
Program Funding
  • 1.3% of the first $81,500 in earnings maximum yearly contribution $1,059.50.
Private Plan Options The Program is administered through the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training. Private Plan options are not permitted.
