ACA plans are comprehensive, with costs often based on your income
Incomes vary among self-employed workers, even from year to year. And that could make affordable, ACA coverage (comprehensive Affordable Care Act plans) a good option. Do you have diverse medical needs? Will you be self-employed for the foreseeable future? Consider your income and where you live, and we’ll help you find the plan you need.
Special enrollment period: Now open Feb. 15th – May 15th
Short-term health plans are flexible and affordable, but provide fewer benefits
Short-term health insurance is temporary, month-to-month coverage—and especially popular with self-employed people who need a bridge between longer-term health plans. Many also provide some coverage for emergency care and illness that might cost you thousands of dollars if you are uninsured. Looking for a short-term fit? We’ll sort through providers to help you find you the right coverage at the right price.
Added benefit: You can enroll in a short-term plan at any time.

Costs vary based on your income and your age.
Like any individual health insurance plan, premiums and out-of-pocket costs for self-employed workers vary widely—but largely depend on where you live (you may be eligible for cost-saving subsidies), how much you earn, and your age.
-
Excluding employer-based health insurance, you have a number of options.
Individual plans through the ACA marketplace are a good place to start if you have a relatively stable income and plan on staying self-employed. But you may also be eligible for Medicaid, or ready for Medicare if you are near or over 65. Or you may decide to enroll in short- term health insurance as a temporary solution.
-
A special enrollment period will take place from February 15, 2021 through May 15, 2021 for individuals and families for ACA marketplace coverage in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The special enrollment period is for the 36 states served by the Health Insurance Marketplace.
-
You can find out if you’re eligible by visiting HealthCare.gov Opens in a new window or by contacting the marketplace call center. If you’re interested in enrolling in Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program, you may already be eligible for existing special enrollment periods.

Some states have their own health insurance coverage mandates, so be sure to check the laws in your area. For people who are self-employed, health insurance can be vital to protect your health and your finances. If there’s an emergency medical event or unexpected major illness, paying for medical expenses out-of-pocket could leave you with long-term medical debt.
