Individual Health Insurance
Health insurance protects you from financial hardship and helps you maintain your health.
At any age, you could have an accident, face a serious illness, or develop a chronic medical condition—all of which come with serious medical expenses. Even the cost of staying well, from checkups to eye exams, adds up quickly. Health insurance plans help cover those expenses, so they don’t become a financial burden.
Open Enrollment is the year-end period you can purchase a health insurance plan for the following year.
Dates for Open Enrollment may differ by state. During this time, you can sign up for a health insurance plan that will begin January 1st of the following year.
You can buy short-term or indemnity health insurance at any time but you cannot change or buy ACA health coverage outside Open Enrollment without a life qualifying event, otherwise known as Special Enrollment period.
Life qualifying events include:- Losing your health insurance through involuntary job loss, divorce or other event
- Having or adopting a child
- Moving outside your current health insurance provider’s service area
- Getting married
- Losing your parents’ health insurance (required after you turn 26 years old)
- Having your current plan canceled
Any health plan you are considering will give you access to a list of in-network doctors.
All health plans let you search their provider network via their websites, or you can contact them by phone to verify whether your doctor is in or out of network.
Most health insurance plans separate essential coverage from non-medical coverage.
While illness, hospitalization, and preventive care are essential in most health insurance plans, dental and vision plans are not. That leaves you free to consider a different provider for those benefits.
ACA Individual Health Insurance
The Affordable Care Act of 2010, also known as Obamacare defines a list of 10 essential benefits that individual marketplace medical plans must cover to be an ACA plan.
ACA plans differ, but all guarantee 10 essential benefits.
By law, ACA plans must cover outpatient, emergency services, surgery, maternity and newborn care, mental health, prescriptions drugs, and preventative and rehabilitative care, as well as lab services and pediatrics. This kind of coverage comes with higher premiums than non-ACA short-term plans but with far greater levels of coverage.
You can start a plan during the annual “Open Enrollment,” or other times in some cases.
The “Open Enrollment” period for 2022 health plans is from November 1 to December 15, 2021. During this time, you can select and join an ACA plan. You can also enroll any time you have a qualifying life event—for example, if you’ve lost existing health coverage, moved, were married, or had a child.
No—in almost all cases, there’s a waiting period before coverage starts.
While you can select a plan any time during Open Enrollment, you won’t start paying premiums until your new coverage begins on January 1. But if you purchase an ACA plan because of a qualifying life event, that coverage won’t begin for at least two weeks, generally at the beginning of the month following enrollment.
Premiums vary and subsidies may be available.
If your income is less than 4x the Federal poverty level, subsidies may cover part of your premium and/or out-of-pocket costs. ACA plans can help manage expenses because they provide a cap on what you have to pay. Maximum out-of-pocket expenses in 2021 were $8,550 for individual plans, and $16,300 for families.
