Low-cost, short-term health plans let you bridge the “insurance gap” between jobs
Short-term health insurance is flexible, temporary, affordable coverage—especially popular with people who need a bridge between longer-term health plans. They also help cover basic medical needs that might cost you thousands of dollars if you remain uninsured. That’s why we carefully sort through providers and premiums to find you the right coverage at the right price.
Added benefit: You can enroll in a short-term plan at any time.
ACA plans provide comprehensive, longer-term coverage based on your budget
Even if you’re unemployed, you may have a choice of affordable health plans that offer “essential” benefits required by the Affordable Care Act of 2010. Does your family need a wider range of benefits? Planning to work independently? Your income level and where you live could make ACA health coverage your best option—and we’ll help find the plan you need.
Special enrollment period: Now open Feb. 15th – May 15th

If you become unemployed, you can keep your employer-based plan or enroll in a new one.
It is very important to avoid a “gap” in which you are not insured. Your options if you lose your job include:
- Continuing your previous insurance for up to 18 months through an employer-based COBRA plan by paying all the premiums yourself
- Enrolling in Medicaid if you meet certain income requirements and other conditions, or Medicare if you are age 65 or older
- Signing up for short-term health insurance which generally offers lower premiums than ACA plans and less coverage
- Purchasing an Affordable Care Act (ACA) health plan, which provides essential benefits but limits the period in which you may enroll
-
Generally, you can keep your plan without interruption or get new coverage immediately.
If you decide to continue on your company’s COBRA plan, your coverage will be uninterrupted. Short-term plans also allow you to enroll at any time. Additionally, because losing a job is a “life qualifying event,” you can enroll in ACA coverage outside of the usual open enrollment periods.
-
A special enrollment period will take place from February 15, 2021 through May 15, 2021 for individuals and families for ACA marketplace coverage in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The special enrollment period is for the 36 states served by the Health Insurance Marketplace.
-
You can find out if you’re eligible by visiting HealthCare.gov Opens in a new window or by contacting the marketplace call center. If you’re interested in enrolling in Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program, you may already be eligible for existing special enrollment periods.
-
If you’re eligible and enroll during the special enrollment period, your coverage will begin on the first of the month after you’ve selected a plan.
-
No, a change in the law removed that mandate in 2019.
However, some states—such as California—have passed their own regulations pertaining to health insurance coverage. Either way, going without health insurance can leave you open to enormous costs if you are injured or get sick. Even an emergency room visit can cost thousands of dollars and can leave you and your family with crippling medical debts.
-
COBRA can be a costly option after you leave your job, depending on the plan you had.
Though COBRA lets you continue your employer-sponsored health insurance uninterrupted, your employer no longer has to pay a certain percentage of the insurance, so you’re responsible for the entire cost yourself.
-
Obviously losing a job means losing an income, so Medicaid may be a good option. But a low or loss of income alone does not qualify you to receive Medicaid. You must also be a U.S. citizen or qualified non-citizen. A Medicaid representative in your area can help you determine whether you are eligible.
-
If you need your short-term insurance coverage to continue longer than anticipated, contact your insurance representative. Short-term insurance plans can often be extended, but it will depend on your specific plan and provider.
