Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans

It’s easy to feel a little confused by all the benefits you can add to original Medicare (known as Part A and B). At the same time, “Supplemental” Medicare insurance lets you tailor a plan that covers many Medicare co-pay and co-insurance costs based on the price you can afford. Want a plan of your own? We’ll make it easy to find the one that works for you.

Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare Advantage lets you “bundle” extra benefits like prescription (Part D) and dental coverage into a single, managed-care package that works within a provider network. But benefits, premiums and other costs vary between plans—so we look at your needs and work with your budget to help you make the right choice.

FAQs: Medicare Plans

Here are a few quick answers to some of the most common questions about Medicare.

Original Medicare

Medicare is a government program for people over 65—or those eligible due to disability.

There are three kinds of Medicare. “Original” Medicare (Parts A and B), “Supplemental” Medicare (optional coverage you can add to Parts A and B), and “Medicare Advantage” (Part C, which “bundles” all your coverage into a managed plan). Part D, prescription drug coverage, can be added to Original Medicare or bundled in a Medicare Advantage Plan.

New Medicare applicants need to enroll during an initial enrollment period.

Unless you already have Medicare due to a disability, Medicare enrollment begins three months before you turn 65—and extends for seven months. Most people can also change their coverage or provider annually.

No, while the program is a good safety net, it’s not designed to cover all expenses.

Original Medicare (parts A and B) requires that you pay co-pays, co-insurance and/or deductibles for most procedures or surgeries. A Medicare Advantage or Supplemental policy are options to consider that may provide for more coverage.

No, but you can include that coverage in addition to original Medicare.

Whether you have original Medicare or opt for a Supplemental plan, you’ll still need to have Medicare Part D if you want coverage for prescription drugs. Drug coverage is also included in most Medicare Advantage plans.

Medicare Supplement and Advantage

Supplemental plans cover many original Medicare co-pays, co-insurance and deductibles, while Medicare Advantage is a single policy that replaces original Medicare.

Supplemental plans can directly pay for Medicare co-pays, co-insurance, and deductibles, while Medicare Advantage is a single policy that replaces original Medicare.

Yes. Medicare Supplement plans cover costs for any provider that accepts Medicare.

All Medicare Supplement plans are standardized by the Federal government to provide core benefits you can use in or out of network. Since it is not “managed care,” you do not need prior authorization to see a specialist.

Medicare Advantage plans often have $0 premiums.

You will still be responsible for your Part B premium.

With most Medicare Supplement plans, you pay a monthly premium to cover original Medicare co-pays.

While Supplemental insurance plans have monthly premiums, they typically combine with Original Medicare to provide close to 100% coverage—and you pay little to no out-of-pocket expenses. So you won’t have to worry about medical bills if you’re ill.
