Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans

It’s easy to feel a little confused by all the benefits you can add to original Medicare (known as Part A and B). At the same time, “Supplemental” Medical insurance lets you tailor a plan that gives you just the coverage you need based on the price you can afford. Want a plan of your own? We’ll make it easy to find the one that works for you.

2020 Medicare Advantage Plans

Rather than build your plan, Medicare Advantage lets you "bundle" extra benefits like prescription (Part D) and dental coverage into a single, managed care package that works within a provider network. But benefits, premiums and other costs vary between plans—so we look at your needs and work with your budget to make the right match.

Here are a few quick answers to some the most common questions about Medicare.

Original Medicare

Medicare is a government program for people over 65—or younger in some cases.

There are three kinds of Medicare. “Original” Medicare (Parts A and B), “Supplemental” Medicare (optional coverage you can add to Parts A and B, and “Medicare Advantage” (Part C, which “bundles” all your coverage into a managed plan).

New Medicare applicants need to enroll during a special enrollment period.

Unless you already have Medicare due to a disability, Medicare enrollment begins three months before you turn 65—and extends for seven months. Most people can also change their coverage or provider annually.

No, while the program is a good safety net, it’s not designed to cover all expenses.

Original Medicare (parts A and B) does cover vision, hearing or dental, and requires that you cover 20% of the costs for procedures or surgeries. A Medicare Advantage or Supplemental policy is designed to fill those gaps.

No, but you can include that coverage in addition to original Medicare.

Whether you have original Medicare or opt for a Supplemental plan, you’ll still need to have Medicare Part D if you want coverage for prescription drugs. Drug coverage is also included in all Advantage plans.

Medicare Supplement and Advantage

Supplemental coverage combines benefits you choose, while Advantage is a single policy.

Supplemental Medicare insurance (also known as Medigap) lets you pick the types of coverage you need, so you have considerable control over your costs and coverage. Medicare Advantage typically covers a range of care including vision, dental and prescriptions within a managed-care network.

Yes—Medicare Supplement plans give you nationwide access to any doctor that accepts Medicare.

All Medicare Supplement plans are standardized by the Federal government to provide core benefits you can use in or out of network. Since it is not “managed care,” you do not need prior authorization to see a specialist.

Medicare Advantage plans often have $0 premiums, but higher out-of-pocket costs.

Medicare Advantage plan premiums are low because you’re responsible for “co-pays” and “co-insurance” if you need a specialist, test, MRI or out-patient surgeries. This may be a good option if you don’t have a lot of medical expenses.

With most Medicare Supplement plans, you pay a monthly premium but no co-pays.

While Supplemental insurance plans have monthly premiums, they typically provide 100% coverage—and you pay no out-of-pocket expenses. So you won’t have to worry about medical bills if you’re ill.
