    • The BenefitAccess rider is available at policy issue only.

  • Chronic Illness Qualifications for Benefits:

    • Satisfactory evidence must be received, including certification by a licensed health care practitioner, that the insured is chronically ill and otherwise meets the terms of the rider. Depending on the expected duration of the illness, an elimination period may apply.* If the client would like to remain on claim, he or she will need to be recertified as chronically ill every 12 months to qualify. This certification is typically based on the fact that the insured:
      • Cannot perform at least two Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) without substantial assistance OR
      • Requires substantial supervision and protection from threats to health and safety due to a severe cognitive impairment.

    Use of Benefits:

    • The use of benefits is unrestricted and can be used for any purpose, which can include:
      • Compensating family and friends for care.
      • Paying someone to come to the home to provide care.
      • Modifications to the home to accommodate the illness.
      • Taking loved ones on a trip or fly them in to visit.
      • Spending it on anything they’d like.
    • The benefit does not require the submission of receipts.

*The elimination period is a period of 90 consecutive calendar days that must pass before benefits can be payable. For those individuals who are certified as chronically ill and not expected to recover from their condition, the elimination period is waived and benefits are payable immediately upon approval of the claim.

  • Claim Requirements for Terminal Illness Option:

    • A claim can be made by the policy owner if the insured is terminally ill and has a life expectancy of six months (12 months in CA) or less. Satisfactory evidence from the insured’s physician must be provided.

The BenefitAccess Rider is an optional rider that accelerates the life insurance death benefit when the insured is terminally ill or is chronically ill and otherwise meets the terms of the rider. It is not Long-Term Care (LTC) insurance. Benefits received under the rider will reduce and may deplete the death benefit. Electing this rider results in an additional charge and underwriting requirements. Some benefit payments may be subject to a fee. Other terms and conditions apply and can vary by state. Clients should consult their tax and legal advisors.

For New York contracts: Please also note the rider is not subject to the minimum requirements of New York law, does not qualify for the New York State Long-Term Partnership Program, and is not a Medicare supplement policy. In addition, receiving accelerated death benefits may affect clients’ eligibility for public assistance programs and such benefits may be taxable. Benefit payments may only be made if the payments are subject to favorable federal tax treatment. When determining whether the benefit payments will receive favorable tax treatment, the payment of benefits from all insurance policies must be considered. Benefit payments may be reduced or unavailable if they are expected to exceed the maximum amount eligible under Internal Revenue Code Section 101(g)(1) and all other applicable sections of federal law for favorable tax treatment.

For some Connecticut contracts: To be eligible for chronic illness benefits your client must also have been confined in a home or institution for at least 6 months previously. This confinement must have been illness related. It also must be expected to continue for life.

Guarantees are based on the claims paying ability of the issuing insurance company.
