Prudential’s History with the Military

Since our founding in 1875, Prudential has demonstrated a clear sense of responsibility to our country and community. This sense is reflected in our relationship with the military that has developed over time and continues today. The timeline below outlines the depth and breadth of Prudential's commitment through the years.

  • 1875 Prudential founded
  • 1919 Formed relationship with the American Legion
    • Prudential's early leaders were instrumental in the development of the American Legion.  Our sixth president, Franklin D'Olier, was its first national commander.
  • 1942 to 1947 Supported the World War II effort
    • Prudential donated the use of its downtown Newark, N.J., building to support our troops during World War II.
  • 1965 to 2015 Began providing financial security to our military
    • 1965 Financial security for active military through life insurance
      • Service members' Group Life Insurance provides life insurance coverage for members of uniformed services.
    • 1974 Extended life insurance security to Veterans
      • Service members' Group Life Insurance was made available to all veterans (must enroll within 1 year and 120 days after separation from service).
    • 2001 Extended life insurance security to military family members
      • Life insurance coverage offered to spouses and children of service members.
    • 2005 Extended security for traumatic injury for active service members
      • Traumatic injury protection provided to service members
    • 2014  At year-end, Prudential provided coverage for:
      • 2.3 million active service members
      • 1 million military spouses
      • 2 million children in military families
      • over 400,000 veterans.  
  • 2010 Strengthened commitment
    • Prudential codified its commitment to the U.S.  military, establishing an Office of Veterans Initiatives and a new business resource group - VetNet – dedicated to veterans employed at Prudential and those interested in issues related to veterans.
  • 2010 Focused on bringing talent home
    • VETalent Program was established to prepare our servicemen and women for civilian careers after completing their service to our country.
  • 2014 Provided new job opportunities in El Paso area
    • In April  2014, Prudential opened a  Business and Technology Services center in El Paso, Texas that is providing quality job opportunities for El Paso residents, including veterans, military spouses and their families.
  • 2015 Began airport partnership with the USO
    • Prudential partnered with the USO to establish a USO center in Newark Liberty International Airport.
