National Down Syndrome Society Joins Forces with Prudential
The Prudential Insurance Company of America is proud to be working with the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) to provide information and services to families who have a loved one with Down syndrome. The services are offered through the Prudential Special Needs Solutions...For All Ages® program.
Established in 1979, the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) is a national advocate for the value, acceptance, and inclusion of people with Down syndrome. According to NDSS, Down syndrome is the most common genetic condition and affects one in every 733 babies born today (Prudential Press Release, 8/16/2010). In fact, more than 400,000 people are currently living with Down syndrome in the United States (Prudential Press Release, 8/16/2010). Down syndrome - first officially identified in 1866 by English physician John Langdon Down - is present when an individual has three, rather than two, copies of the 21st chromosome. This additional genetic material alters the course of fetal development and causes the characteristics commonly associated with Down syndrome. Learn more about the National Down Syndrome Society. Prudential is not affiliated with National Down Syndrome Society
Services We Can Provide
More than 140 Prudential and independent financial professionals throughout the country are specifically trained to provide services to families of people with special needs. These professionals are prepared to address a wide range of topics, including:
- Funding the Special Needs Trust (SNT). This is a legal document prepared by an attorney with expertise in special needs law for the benefit of an individual - a child, spouse, or surviving parent - with a disability. It may be created while the grantor is alive (an inter vivos SNT) or be part of a will (a testamentary SNT). A child, spouse, or parent with a disability often has unique and long-term needs that are not provided for by Medicaid and other government benefit programs, such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI). The SNT operates to meet those needs by supplementing, not replacing, government benefits. Prudential's financial professionals can recommend appropriate insurance and financial products to help fund a SNT.
- Planning for the Future. Our trained financial professionals can recommend appropriate financial products-such as life insurance to fund a SNT-and strategies to help build and maintain financial protection for the benefit of individuals with special needs. It is important to remember that your dependent's needs will change throughout his or her life, so appropriate planning for those stages is critical.
- Creating a Letter of Intent. While not a legal document, a letter of intent states your wishes for your dependent's future with regard to personal preference and habits, health issues, educational goals, housing, etc., and can be enormously helpful to others who may be involved in the dependent's care.
These financial professionals will also participate in a series of Prudential-sponsored educational webinars throughout the year and be actively involved in several events hosted by their local NDSS, such as the Buddy Walk® program and live seminars on financial literacy.
