Whether your dependent is young, old, or somewhere in-between, you should craft a plan that addresses his or her unique special needs. We understand that the needs of a child are quite different from those of an adult or a senior.
Use the checklist below to help you identify what support works best for your loved one and the services you should consider with your legal and tax advisors.
|
Child
- Know your child's diagnosis and treatment plan.
- Develop a dialogue with community resources, such as doctors, therapists, teachers, and support groups.
- Make certain that your school district develops an Individual Education Plan (IEP) that responds to your child's long-term educational and behavioral needs. Be prepared to ask for specific services, because school districts are concerned about their budgets.
- Determine if college is a realistic goal for your child and discover what schools are equipped to address your child's unique needs.
Adult
- Know your adult dependent's health condition and treatment plan.
- Decide if establishing a guardianship is appropriate.
- Determine what sort of housing works best for your dependent adult.
- If your dependent is employed, ensure that income is reported and treated according to federal guidelines.
- Plan for recreational and leisure activities.
- Monitor your special needs trust document to ensure that trust assets are used to supplement-not replace-government benefits.
Senior
- Know your senior dependent's health condition and treatment plan.
- Understand any long-term living arrangements and all associated costs.
- Consider the impact of aging on a current diagnosis and the need for additional resources.
- Research your senior's eligibility for federal and state resources.
- Initiate estate planning for your senior dependent.
