Foundation Policies and Guidelines
The following information is intended to provide you with a guideline of the criteria The Prudential Foundation uses when providing support for non-profit organizations. We have also provided guidelines for identifying what The Prudential Foundation does not fund. Please review this information carefully before beginning the application process.

What The Prudential Foundation Funds
Each year, The Prudential Foundation invests over $25 million in grants in efforts that support the revitalization of communities. In order to promote sustainable communities, and improve outcomes for community residents, The Prudential Foundation focuses its strategy in the following areas:

Education
  • Education leadership to support reform in public education. Within this framework, the Foundation works to improve student achievement by increasing the leadership capacity of educators, parents and community residents to implement public school reform. It also funds organizations whose efforts influence policy that adapts best practices and research-based approaches to support instruction and learning in schools.
  • Youth development to build skills and competencies needed for young people to be productive citizens. It includes expanding arts education opportunities, and supporting effective out-of-school-time programs for young people.


Economic Development
  • Workforce development programs that train and place individuals in demand occupations.
  • Business development opportunities to create and grow businesses.
  • Community development with a focus on strengthening community development corporations.


Civic Infrastructure
  • Arts as an economic engine and as a quality-of-life issue to ensure that residents have access to quality arts programs.
  • Capacity-building activities for nonprofit organizations to ensure their sustainability and growth.
  • Open spaces by preserving and creating public parks and playgrounds.
In 2008, The Prudential Foundation will focus its efforts in the following locations: Newark, NJ; Hartford, CT; Philadelphia, PA; New York, NY; Chicago, IL; Los Angeles and San Francisco, CA; Dallas and Houston, TX; Dubuque, IO; Jacksonville, FL; Minneapolis, MN; Phoenix, AZ; and Scranton, PA. The Foundation is addressing local needs in other countries, including Mexico, Brazil, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, India and China.

What The Prudential Foundation Does Not Fund
We generally do not fund capital campaigns, annual fund drives, or endowments. We have a limited fund allocated for capital campaigns and scholorships to education institutions. We do not consider requests for:
  • Organizations that are not tax-exempt under paragraph 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code.
  • Veterans, labor, religious, athletic, or fraternal groups—except when these groups provide needed services to the community at large.
  • Direct grants or scholarships to individuals.
  • Support for single-disease health groups.
  • Goodwill advertising.
  • Fundraising events, such as walkathons.

Non-Discrimination
The Prudential Foundation supports nonprofit, charitable organizations and programs whose mission and operations are broad and non-discriminatory. The Foundation focuses its resources to support organizations whose activities address social needs or benefit underserved groups and communities.
